The Reichsluftschutzbund in Danzig
Sometimes, at the Dominican Fair (Gdansk’s annual flea market that runs in August) one can be lucky to find some newspapers from pre-war Danzig. In addition to this source, it may be possible to climb into an altic to find those same newspapers being used to keep the cold winds out of the house. That’s where the small remnants in this report were found. (Duri ng the first half of the 20th Century, German and Polish families alternated the ownership of homes - and attics - in Danzig and Zoppot.)
Admittedly, the paper scraps didn’t provide enough text space to make much sense, but they did create enough incentive to investigate the Now we find that even this phase of Germ an preparedness is not well-documented and is hard to find. (Author needed!!) Nevertheless, here are some scraps of information. Giles reports that in H. G. Sigler’s book, “Danzig Chronik, elites Juhruiusnd.s - is an entry for 9th May, 1935, which lranslatcs:into “An air defence drill was organized by the Danzig Air Defence League, with simulated air attack on Langfuhr with practice alarms and firefighting equipment”.
The first Issue of the Mr Defence League stamps In Germany occurred with these three on March 3, 1937, showing a guard with RLB shield. The design was from an advertising poster by Prof. L Hohiw ein. Perfs are 14, and paper was unwotermorked. This set of German stamps was valid until the last day of Dec., 1938. On March 27, 1937, L)onzlg’s first pair of RLB stamps was released.
