VOGELS:THE PORT GDANSK 1-ZLOTY STAMPS
In 1928 Poland, stamps with pictures ‘of MarshallPilsudski and president Mocicki were issued. For thc first time, Poland issued line engraved stamps. in 1929 and 1933, these stamps were issued for the Polish post in the Free City of Gda,Isk, with the overprint’PORT GDA4SK. There is quite a hit of literature on the original Polish stamps; however, the quantity of litcrflure on the Port Gdahsk stamps is minimal. Additionally, literature that does exist on these stamps shows some inaccuracies, and stamps from a few collections show that the literature is also not complete in its descriptions of plates that were used. Hans Vogels raies some questions about the Port Gdatask 1-zloty stamps that, [hopefully, will be answered in the future.
THE PILSUDSKI AND MOSCICKE STAMPS
On the occasion of the first stamp exhibition in Waiszawa, from the 3rd to the 13th of May, 1928, a special commemorative block was issued. This block contained two stamps of a new issue that was being prepared with portraits of Marshall Pilsudski and Presiden M*cicki. Only the color was changed from black into brown. A few days after the exhibt ion closed, the normal black stamps were put on sale. The order of the Post Ministry was already signed on 23 March, 1928, but published only in DL Un. of 12.5.1928 Nr.10,pagc 139, pos.43, to avoid that the stamps would be used before those of the exhibition block.
For the new stamps of 50 groszy and 1 zloty, a more elaborate process of stamp production was’ chosen; namely, the line engraving method. This was probably done because the postal authorities had to cope with forgers of the typographed stamps. The project for these stamps was headed by Prof. Zygmunt Kamin.ski. The engraving was done by Prof. Ferdinand Schirnböck, who worked for the State Printing Works in Vienna, since there were no experienced engravers in Poland at that time.
Since 1920, stamps were printed at the Panstwowe Zakiady Graficzne (P.Z.G.) in Warszawa. During the mid-twenties, the Polish government decided to build a modem printing plant: Polskiej Wytwornia Papie row Wartosciowych (P.W.P.W.). In 1930, the printing of the PWsudski and Mocicki stamps was transferred from the P.Z.G. to the P.W.P.W. plant. The stamps were printed on a press of thc “Nadherny” system.
For this article, only the 1-Zloty stamps with the portrait of President Mocicki are important, he cause only these stamps were overprinted for the Polish post in Gdañsk.
