>> 6 HEVELIUSPLATZ: THE MAIN POST OFFICE
6.1 DOMESTIC MAIL

On 1 August 1926 the designated numbers of the Harbour Post Office Gdańsk 1 and the main Post Office Gdańsk 3 were transposed. In a city with more than one Post Office, the main post office should always be designated number I. Because of the different tasks of each Post Office, described in the wording of the datestamps, it was not possible for them simply to exchange them. k was decided, therefore, to change the numbers in the datestamps instead.

Control imprints of the datestamp and other handstamps that were used by one of the postal clerks at the main Post Office on 27 March 1936. The POLSKI URZĄD P.-T. No 1 GDAŃSK k cds was used mainly for mail that for different reasons could not be delivered normally, for postage due and proofs of delivery. The other handstamps indicate the way mail was handled: ZWROT (return to sender) AWIZOWAŁEM DNIA.. (I lefl a message on..) ADRESAT NIEZNANY WYWOŁANIE BEZSKUTECZNE (addressee unknown, enquiries unsuccessful).
