6.1.1 DOMESTIC MAIL — THE USE OF POSTAGE STAMPS

On 5 January 1925, the same day as the Polish Post and Telegraph Officie Gdańsk No 3 was opened for the public, eleven Polish stamps overprinted PORT GDAŃSK were issued for the Polish Post in Gdańsk. From then onwards new stamps were only issued when needed, for example when supplies of the most popular stamps ran out, such as those used for ordinary letters or postcards, or when new postal rates made new stamps necessary. For these issues current Polish stamps were simply overprinted.

 

Above: Postcard sent from Gdańsk to Brusy. No postcards with PORT GDAŃSK were available at that moment, therefore the use of normal Polish postacrds was allowed. An additional 5 groszy postage was necessary the rate for a postcard was increased by 5 groszy on 1 December 1927. POLSKI URZ. P.-T. GDAŃSK No 1 cds 4.1.28.
Below: Picture postcard sent from the S.S. Gdańsk with the rectangular handstamp of that ship. The card was franked with a 15 groszy Port Gdańsk stamp from the 1926 issue, covering the rate for picture postcards with a message of more than 5 words. POLSKI URZ. P.-T.
