During WW II, when Germany occupied Warsaw, printing plates with the overprint 'Port Gdansk' eagle series were used to create philatelic errors; such as, inverted and damaged letters. In addition, the overprint was printed on the wrong type of parer for the Gdansk edition. These illegal WW II printings have already shown up ij a Warsaw auction in November, 1943. 'Buyers beware !'

If you sail toward the mouth of the Vistula and pass a number of shipyards on your port side, keep your eyes pealed for this, appearing like a yellow-brick building that served the Polish population and received food and clothing packages from families in the United States since 1920. A few books, such as H.H. Fisher's " America and the New Poland" reveal some of these efforts in the 1920s. Since the book was written in 1928, it wasn't possible to include the work of the Hoover Commission. Many of the countries that suffered war damage found it impossible to plant crops and to feed its people after the wars, relying on aid from other countries who were more fortunate. Many European countries also sent aid to their neighbors with whatever they could furnish.
