Danzig in the First World War.

The two patriotic cards below, glorifying German victories of 1914-1915, were both posted in Danzig to Berlin in 1915.
The first was sent on 16 April from a recruitment depot of an infantry battalion at Danzig-Neufahrwasser.
The second depicts Paul von Hindenburg.
Hindenburg was born in Posen (then in Prussia) in 1847, the son of a Prussian army officer. He was commissioned into the 3rd Foot Guards at Danzig in 1866 and awarded the Iron Cross in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71. In 1911 he retired from the army with the rank of General. On the outbreak of war in 1914 he was recalled to command the 8th Army in East Prussia, where in August 1914 he overerwhelmingly defeated the Russians at Tannenburg. In 1925 Hindenburg was elected President of Germany.
