third time from 1920 to 1939, a somewhat dubious political status as a “Free State”. The city’s consequential fate then was not dissimilar from, albeit even worse than, that which it suffered in 1813. In 1945 “occupying” German troops defended ‘Festung Danzig” against the encircling Russian onslaught and between them left the city devastated with over 8O0/o of buildings either completely destroyed or very badly damaged. Polish Gdañsk flourishes again today, but what of the future?
