The First Provisional Issue of the Free City - issued on 14 June 1920

On June 14th, a set of eleven stamps Irom the first provisional issue ol 1920 was released. Stamps that were issued at later dales (4Opf. @13 Sept., 1.50 M.@ 20 July., 3 M.@ 20 July., 4 M.@21 1)ec.) are not included in this study. The groups of both early and late issues received the same black overprints Irom the Reichsdriickerei Berlin. This overprint was known as the Berliner Aufdruck.

In addition to the eleven stamps shown above, one Kartenbrief, six Posikarten were overprinted and one Poslanweisung (postal money order) were released with the same Berliner Aufdruck on 14 June 1920. The later sets of overprinted German stamps were all made at the Julius Sauer Druckerei at 69 Fleischergassc in the city of I)anzig, not in Berlin. These stamps begin numbering from Michel No. 16 as Danzig starts to show its independence from Germany.
