GANZSACHEN - NEUENTDECKUNG
The Danzig-Ganzsachen-Postkarte NGK-7 originated in Nov. 1920 thru a postal increase, in as much that the 10-pfg cards of the German Empire NGK-107 (Postkarte” above dividing line) received a red overprint which makes the country name “German Empiret’ invisible under the new raster. Showing above the n’ arched designation of “DANZIG” is the new value “30” covering up the original “10” values at the left and right.
For the necessary overprinting, original cards were collected at various post offices. It may be most likely attributed to this circumstance that, also, one older original card was mixed into the filling-up of one pack of one hundred cards, which, after its use, had been left undiscovered for decades.
Thanks to a great coincidence, this piece reappeared, which, as an original card, has the number NGK-97 "Postkarte” to the right of the dividing line and no watermark). This, on the above piece, carries a very early postmark dated 14.11.20, is from a genuine press run and represents a genuinely used card without any philatelic influence.
On the back side of the card, the new “Lady of the Free City” draws attention to a little package of bacon, the mark of then prevailing privations. After a more than 50-year “sleeping beauty” sleep, could now be discovered a Danzig variety which is not listed either in the NGK, Michel or in any other catalog. Also, it wasn’t listed in the "Kleine Handbuch der Ganzsachen von Danzig” (1973) by the late Curt Michaelis of Preetz.
