mistook the “R” for an “E” and the “E” for an “F”. Through the courtesy of Mr. Schüler, I am enclosing a legible copy of the cancel:

(3) From John Whiteside:
The Rheda cancel is: RHEDA / REG. BEZ. DANZIG. REG. BEZ. is, as you say, Regierungs Bezirk. I have a copy on a 1 Sgr shield on piece.

Rheda was outside the 1920 Free State boundary, but was within the Danzig OPD of West Prussia. I have it marked on an old atlas of 1900. It was about 13 miles north-northwest of Zoppot. On a map of Poland it is west of Gdynia between Gdynia and Wejherowo. I don’t know its Polish name.

You are incorrect in saying it used Prussian ring number 1233. This was Rheda in Westfalen, not far from Dortmund

According to “Altdeutschland unter der Lupe”, Rheda was opened in July 1863 as Rheda in Westpreussen to distinguish it from the same name in Westfalen.

Many thanks to all of the above correspondents for their valuable help in solving the mysteries.
