This is a study of the Fourth Air Mail Issue, valid from 18.10.23 to 2.11.23, at the height of the inflation period. There are only four stamps in this brief period.
The four values are:
No. 177: 250,000 Mk
No. 178: 500,000 Mk
No. 179: 2 Millionen on 100,000 Mk
No. 180: 5 Millionen on 50,000 Mk

The 100,000 and 50,000 Mk face values were intended for use before overprinting, but by the time the stamps were prepared, such small amounts were useless for postage! Some of these unsurcharged stamps were sold and both values are known in unused condition, with horizontal (normal) watermark.

Due to a misplaced clichJ, the 50,000 Mk stamp is some times found se-tenant with a 10,000 Mk. With a 5 Millionen black overprint, it is known as 180F. Imperforate varieties of the 250,000 and 500,000 Mk values are known but only with horizontal watermark. All varieties of the printing are known with vertical watermark and are designated as 177X, 178X, 179X and 180X. Possibly only 100 stamps in each category originally existed.

The air mail service during the time that these four stamps were valid was in operation for only four days. Therefore, flown covers bearing these stamps are scarce.

In this Report we have attempted to correlate all of the information compiled by du Boulay, Whiteside and especially Bud Hennig’s actual collection of this issue. We were able to identify 2 unknown positions from Giles’ Report #31, Pg.4 thru Bud’s work.

The center stamp in the block at left is #180F, and appears used. But look at the August date and you can see that a fool has been parted from his money by a predated CTO!
