Official envelope of the Volkstag—Danzig, measuring 5 15/16” x 15 3/16” and containing Mi. #158 with the 100 Tausend overprint, cancelled 1.9.23. The highest denomination of an official (DM) stamp was 1000 Mk, as seen in Ml. #D—40. As the spiralling costs of postage due to the inflation continued, it was decreed in the middle of August 1923 that regular postage stamps were to be used for official mail.
The 100 Tausend local postal rate would carry a weight of 100 to 250 grams (approximately 3.5 to 8.75 ounces), and the rate lasted nine days.
(Right): Cover from 30.4.23 with 2 Mi. #D-27 stamps and purple handstamped “l3riefstempel/Volks—tag/Danzig” as used on official mail.
