The Treaty of Versailles provided for a small detachment of British troops to be stationed in Danzig to control the postal arrangements. This group was commanded by Sir Reginald Tower and directed by the “Allied Administration”. This action took place for two or three months after 1 January 1920, during which the Soldiers’ Mail was sent free and franked with “Army Post Office — F12”. A green oval cachet was hand-stamped on the cover: “Allies Administration - Danzig”.

(Left) Cover from Danzig 16.2.20 to Preston, England with “FIELD POST OFFICE l-1—2” postmark; large oval “BRITISH G.FI.Q. DANZIG” cachet in violet; rectangular “PASSED BY CENSOR No.7151” mark in black and sender’s name Signaller H. Catterall G.H.Q. Danzig. Only 3 such covers have been recorded.
