From Burt f1i11er: Here are a couple of notes about the Schaffner Bahnpost cancels. It appears to me that there is a faint “8” and what could be a “5” in the year position on the illustration, indicating “1885”. I have only seen this cancel on postcards, never on letters, which doesn’t mean much, since I’ve seen only 7 or 8 of them. All were for points outside of Danzig, as would be expected for Bahnpost items. I, too, have wondered about the purpose of this cancel. I believe that they were cancelled at Danzig 3 and then forwarded to the rail system under security, but I doubt that it was by streetcar. This seems like a good question for Karl Kniep! Here ore a couple of copies from my collection:

The top item is Type 2, with the Gothic date typeface and dot after the 3, cancelled 2. Feb. 1884 on a 10 p1 rate card to Liverpool. This cancel shows the 24-hour time indication.

The second is Type 3 with Grotesk dote typeface, without the dot after 3. It is cancelled 17. Dec. 1887 on a 5 pf rate cord to Apolda. This cancel shows the PM indication on the time line.
