This 21 January 1939 Police Permit reads: “Regarding your letter of 17 Jan.1939, I would like to inform you that from the point of view of the Police, I have nothing against your sending the Jewish ritual objects from the Great Synagogue to America, provided that the proceeds be used for the purposes of the emigration of the Jewish Community of Danzig.” The collection was hastily packed into crates and arrived at the Jewish Theological Seminary on July 26, 1939.
Coincidentally, the dome of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, located in Baltimore, is not too distant from a similar design to that of Danzig’s Great Synagogue.
