In Danzig, during the years 1816 to 1850, women predominated in the population. Up until 1821, there was a general increase in the Roman Catholic population, but the process was reversed after that period, as the Protestant population was increasing very quickly. Part of the reason was that more and more Prussians emi9rated to Danzig, as the city developed as an administrative center, to work in the offices as clerks. The city took on a Prussian flavor.

Breakdown of the religious groups from 1706 to 1849:

Prussian expansion persisted in the first half of the 19th Century. The large jump in the Jewish population was not a result of an influx from other regions, but originated when Frederick II had the Jews settled in suburban hamlets, in order to develop a competitive commercial edge with Danzig. As these hamlets were included within the city, this group of the population increased automatically. They received city rights on an equal footing with other groups of the populace, despite objections on the part of the citizens of Danzig. The city of Danzig was turned over to Prussian authorities by the Russian military in 1814, at which time the Prussians began to organize and apply the city administration under the Municipal Ordinance of 1808.
