ONLY OLIVA’S TREES HAVE CHANGED
The familiar landmarks of Danzig, as illustrated on both the Free City’s stamps and its postal stationery, stir our curiosity in finding the structures as they appear today. Thanks to Polish skills and diligence, much of the 1945 damage has been rebuilt, and we can now walk the streets of Gdansk that appear much as they did centuries ago. But there are scenes which were outside of the main Soviet blitz and siege; one of those sites is the Cathedral at Oliva. Both the exterior and the interior are familiar to you, but did you ever speculate on how the scene below, engraved by Hellingrath in the 1920’s, would look today? Last May we took a camera to Oliva and recorded the contemporary scene illustrated on Page 3.
