Voices from the Past

[From the MERCURY STAMP JOURNAL - Volume 2, March 1950:]

A new Danzig discovery, the 5M Germany with inverted overprint, but regular center, is described by Dr. Dub in Die Basler Taube (Basil). The two known copies were used on May 28, 1921, at Danzig and have a circular hole in the center, which seems to prove that they were used on parcel post cards.

[From a later edition of the MERCURY STAMP JOURNAL:]

“A new Danzig discovery,” our note on page 14 about the inverted overprint, has brought several comments. We were able in the meantime to ascertain that the “new discovery” is even listed in the Kohl-Handbook. It is quite puzzling how a philatelist of such reputation as Dr. Dub could report such old facts as new and how we could be deceived by it, without checking more closely. We shall not fail to do so in the future.
