Another source of collecting philatelic items from Danzig is in the newspaper wrappers, which contain not only stamps and interesting cancellations from the 1920’s and 1930’s, but which also provide a historical perspective to the news. Each of the daily newspapers eventually took on a hard political line, especially those that affiliated with the National Socialist Party in the mid-30’s. By that time, the newspapers were filled with propaganda and contained managed news directly from Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels, Minister for Propaganda and National Enlightenment (1933-1945).
Secondary publications that were sent through the posts included stamp collectors’ weeklies, much like our present-day Lrnns reports. One such publication, Das Danziger Postwertzeichen, is illustrated below. Unfolded size of this wrapper is 7-5/16” wide and 12-3/4” overall height. This is a late example, from 3.8.39, with stamp Mi. #291 and local cancel: DANZIG 1/(Sandweg).
