Steamer Columbus,  North German Lloyd liner.

An important symbol of the rebirth of Danzig’s shipbuilding industry after the 1st World War, the S.S. Columbus was the largest vessel ever launched at any of the Danzig yards. It was built at the Shichau Werft and was christened in 1923. Until the Europa and Bremen were constructed, the Columbus was the flagship of the fleet, larger and newer than her rivals. The 39,300- ton liner was 25.3 meters wide x 236 meters long. During the Second World War, the Columbuts was chased near the Florida coast by a British cruiser. To prevent being taken as a prize, the crew coated the decks with Mexican oil from its large storage tanks and set the entire ship on fire. Almost instantaneously, the ship was covered with flame, killing several of the crew and causing the total loss of the steamer.
