German Colonies and Agricultural Expositions of 1904
Danzig's First and Only Ties to the German Colonies.
Let’s clarify the headline. As you can see, the card above is not from the Agricultural Exhibit but from a Colonial Exhibition held in Danzig at the Frederich Wilhelm Schützenhaus from May 29 until June 7, 1904. According to John Miskevich, who sent in the card, this colonial exposition opened shortly before the Landwirtschaftliche Ausstellung (Agricultural Exhibit). The card was mailed to Paris from Danzig on May 30, 1904; the background is yellow with a black line drawing.
One of John’s topical postal history collections relates to the German Colonial Expositions held from 1896 to 1942, and this one may be the only Colonial Exhibit held in Danzig. The postcard was printed by Gebruder Zebner Danzig (lower left). In the backgrcund at the upper right there is an entrance portal to the exhibition grounds reading: EINGANG Kolonial-Austellung. The postcard shows a reconstructed African village with German merchants engaged in commercial transactions.
