100 YEARS OF X-RAYS: 1895-1995

It wasn’t until we were at the FLOREX bourse in Orlando that we realized our Röntgen stamps and covers had finally come of age. Installed in the lobby was a very informative display of the history of X-rays, predominately showing the contribution of the honoree of Danzig Mi.No.308: Wilhelm C.Rontgen. On November 8, 1895, he noted the penetrating effects of rays emitted from a Crookes tube; when stimulated by an induction coil, it illuminated a nearby piece of cardboard coated with barium platinocyanide. Röntgen called his discovery “the x-ray” because of its unknown properties. (see page 13)

A philatelic cover containing the set of three notable medical men who were honored by the Danzig Post Office: Johann Gregor Alendel, Robert Koch and Wilhelm C. Röntgen. The assembler of this LZI3O flight cover thoughtfully included a copy of Mi. 20611 with the broken G. The new Graf Zeppelin #LZ13O became a victim of the September ‘39 war
