CAPEX 1978
Toronto is a very pleasant city - clean, hospitable and blessed with many excellent restaurants. The Germany Philatelic Society held its String Meeting in conjunction with the International CAPEX Show. G.P.S. was headquartered in the Sheraton Centre, and the view from our 42nd floor room was breath taking. Unfortunately, the CAPEX exhibition hail was several miles away - too far to walk with stamps, want-lists, etc., and served by an unreliable shuttle bus service. Communications among G.P.S. members were difficult to maintain since the Hospitality Suite was the only common meeting place and couldn’t, of course, be open at all times. This is a common problem that is generally solved only when all events are held in one building, such as at BALPEX and at our Fall Convention in Chicago.
Prices at CAPEX were quite steep, according to the complaints heard throughout our stay. The justification for paying those inflated prices is the fact that you may not see the scarce piece that you’ve been seeking for another 10 years, and it will be 100% higher by then. Pete Rickenback and Bride had only a dozen Danzig covers but had packed their stock book of errors and proofs and other goodies. Pete’s U.S. dollar evaluation was $1.90, close to what we expected and cheaper than his $2.00 at INTERPHIL. ‘76. You would have found his premium material selling at the 1978 NH Michel prices, although many are margin or corner copies, both IH and NH. (So far we haven’t heard of a Danzig specialist slitting his wrists because he spent a lifetime scouring the world for stamps that suddenly turned out to be known as “LW’ or worse. Leave the NH Game to the idiots who like the rear ends better than the stamps themselves.)
Outside of Rickenback’s stock book, Danzig was very lightly represented in the bourse. One dealer from Germany had an imperf set of the 1924 airs. We found
