St. George’s Hall and the Langgasser Tor
Opposite the Stockturm is tite Langgasscr Tor (1612) and St. George’s Hall (1487—94), tite roof of which is crowned with a figure of St. George and the dragoii. The hail was formerly used by tite corporation of St. George as their guilditail. The Langgasser Tor leads into the Langgasse, Danzig’s principal business street. In this street many fine patrician houses are to be seen dating from tite period of [)anzig’s greatest prosperity. During the Renaissance period these houses received their spendid street fronts.
From the earliest times these houses were given not only their rich artistic decoration, but the fronts were painted in warm colours, as if an effort was made to forget tite melancholic Northern skies in the bright colours of their houses. Many fine examples of ancient citizens’ houses have been preserved in Danzig witnessing eveit today to the artistic taste and to the wealth of their owners.
