At the end of the War by the Treaty of Versailles from 1919 Danzig and surrounding territory again enjoyed the status of being a Free City, now proclaimed by the issue of her own stamps, often portraying the city’s arms of a shield bearing a crown surmounted by two crosses. Poland had adninistrative govenarice over the city, but the remaining German Legislative Assembly tended to antagonise the Poles. Poland be&an to expand nearby Gdyruia which grew rapidly as a rival port.Nean while the German Nazi party was also growing, a reflection of this being found in the Winter-help stamp issues each year from 1934 to 19Z8 in aid of a similar fund started in the Reich, and in the incorp— ortion of the Swastikainto the design of stamps of the late thirties.
In 1938 Hitler demanded that Danzig and the corridor to the sea be given to Germany.Poland’s refusal :as used by Germany as a provocation for its attack on Poland on September 1st 1939 thus precipitating the Second .‘orld War.
