STILL A DANGER
The Nazi seal on page 25 of Danzig Report No.90 exhibits more properties than merely being in one’s imagination. The major difficulty is that the cancelling device itself is now in private hands, meaning that this stempel can show up at any time to “improve” legitimate covers. There are probably a few old covers to which this cancel was authentically applied, but the circumstances should be carefully evaluated before sinking good money into some dealer’s pocket.
NOTE: Additional info on those infamours Danzig” telegams didn’t arrive in time for this Report. See DR No.93.
WHADZITSAY?
What is said on covers is often a mystery, especially when written in pencil on a dark envelope. We took this item to Gdansk and asked Hans, Aleksy, Giles and others to interpret what was written on the back of this Zuruck cover from 1939. It possibly reads: “Unbekannt verlegt/ Firma aufgelost...” with postman’s signature underneath, which roughtI translates to “company is unknown and has been dissolved - return to sender 13/6 (13 June 1939)”. You may be able to read even more into the message after studying the script.
