OUT ON THE PENINSULA
John Neefus sent in this example of a not-too-frequent cancel with an unusual date. FIrst of all, in which town is this 1921 post office located? All that can be detected on the stamp (Deutsches Reich Mi.#11O) is KAHLB—, with what appears to be FRISCHE NEHRUNG at the bottom of the cancel. Since this refers to the peninsula east of Danzig that separates the Baltic from the Frisches Haff, we found a map that shows several towns east of Stutthof, including Pröbbernau and Kahlberg.
Now comes the question for its being cancelled on a German stamp - a year after the formation of the Danzig Free City. Is it because this small post office, possibly in a grocery or general store, had a stock of German stamps still to be used before the arrival of the new Free City stamps? Or, as the color on the original map indicates, did this office lie within that small finger of Germany (East Pmssia) that was not a part of Danzig? This cancel will not be found in either the ArGe’s or Klaus Wolfe’s cancel books, supporting this assumption.
