6.1 DOMESTIC MAIL

In Autumn 1924 the Polish Postał and Telegraphic Management Office moved into the former hospitał building at the Heveliusplatz, in the centre of the city of Gdańsk. In this same building, on 5 January 1925 the main Post Office POLSKI URZĄD POCZTOWO-TELEGRAFICZNY No 3 (Polish Post and Telegraph Office Gdańsk No 3) was opened for the public and started to handle private mail between Poland and Gdańsk.
On the same day, eleven Polish postage stamps overprinted PORT GDAŃSK were issued for the Polish Post in Gdańsk. These stamps were issued for use on correspondence to Poland only. Mail franked with these stamps could either be delivered at the Post Office or directly into one of the ten letter-boxes that were placed in various positions around the city. A Polish mail delivery service was started in part of the city as well, delivering mail received from Poland
