Hitler Reveals his Ambition in Memel :

"The Danzig Chess Game"
and the threat of the mailed fist. In fact, Danzig was only pretext; Hitler was
planning nothing less than the total destruction of Poland as an independent state.

The next not-so-careful step :

Apart from the 'protection' given to Slovakia {and Memel}, caused much worry to the Poles Justified fear that the Wehrmacht would now be able to operate from Slovak territory. Poland would have to extend her frontier armies along the Carpathian border for a further 220 miles.

Given this situation, Robbentrop's March 21st appeared to sound like the first rumble of thunder of the storm to Warsaw. The Germans not only resumed their claims to Danzig, and the Corridor; he insisted that the German-Polish agreement could not survive without Poland's exhibing a clear anti-Soviet attitude. Poland must understand that she must choose between Germany or Russia. Worse yet, Memel fell two days later, after an ultimatum. Lost at Versailles in 1919, the Germans were slowly geting their lands back.  . . .
