POSTGESCHICHTE means “postal history” to most German-area philatelists.mMany of us strive to mašter the historical implications involved in them collecting of stamps and covers, but sometimes we miss seeing some interesting names or events that may be printexl on our own covers. For instance, the cover below has been in our collection for a couple of years, but we didn’t realize the sender’s identity until Bill Ruh sent a copy of “Hitler’s Free City; A history of the Nazi Party in Danzig, 1925—1939”, by Herbert S. Levine, published in 1973 by the University of Chicago Press. The letter was from Hans-Albert Hohnfeldt, member of the Volkstages (Danzig Parliament), to the chief business office of the National sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP or Nazi party). As a background to this more obscure time in the history of Danzig, consider the rivalry between Germany and Poland over the new Free City.
