The magnificent Houe Tor (High Gate), erected in 1588, is built of sandstone in the style of Flemish renaissance and is the main entrance to the city. Formerly it stood in the walls ni the fortifications and only silice their removal does it stand oitt freely exposed. Behind it the lofty Gothic Stockturm is seen (1346—1599). Titis too was a part of the medieval fortifications and was used recently as a prison. Adjoining titis tower and courtyard is the Torture Chamber, a renaissance structurc (1592—1593) surmounted by four fine gables. Titisgroup of buildings belongs to the most beautiful monu ments of the city. The courtyard to which we enter through the wide pointed arch of the Stockturm is an architectural gem. To the South of titis group is tite Batik of Danzig, a modern building oi great magnificence which was formerly the Reicltsbank.
