forced to give up their pet projects. Dr. Helferich, a Prussian financial administrator, became financial dictator. This didn’t create a solution, and a tariff war with Poland merely created more trade for Gdynia, while Danzig’s port came to a halt. With a diplomatic deadlock developing, Schacht, Greiser and Helferich produced a plan for declaring Danzig a “free port”, or joining the free city to Germany. They may have been speculating on the early return of Danzig to the Reich, as soon as the spring of 1936.

On the opposite page is a chart indicating salary seniority calculations in order to determine the status of the emigree. It is translated:

As a result of the transfer to German salary regulations of Danzig civil servants whose official place of residence is the City of Danzig (place category A).
