Curt Michaelis has pointed out (“Dienstbriefe aus der Zeit vor dem Erscheinen der Dienstmarken” are his words) that existing postage stamps were used in lieu of special DM stamps, which were not available until the 25th of August, 1921. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate one such official correspondence by an agency of the Danzig government. Keep in mind that the Danzig Free City came into being on the 15th of November, 1920, and that it was necess ary to use German stamps with Danzig overprints until the first definitives (the Kogge set) appeared on January 31st, 1921, almost eight months before the DM overprints appeared.
