POSTAL HISTORY OF THE DM OVERPRINTS:
On December 8, 1921, the following was decreed concerning the validity of the Danzig postage stamps overprinted with the DM:
The official stamps (Dienstmarken) were first used on 1 September 1921, with overprints of DM on the shield issue (Wappenausgabe). Values up to 3 marks were allowed to be used for official postal mailings to Germany, Poland and the Memel area. No mailings were allowed to foreign countries.

FIGURE 11 - An unseparated 2-part reply card with official inquiry to a landowner from the magistrate in charge of the tax administration. Both cards contain the 20-p fennig D4 stamp, which was part of the first DM issue, 25 August 1921, and valid until 30.9.23. Obligatory use of the overprints took place I Sept., so there are opportunities for findi ng usage during various periods of time. This card is even more unusual, since it was mailed on 1 August 1921. It was signed by Schuler.
