* Aus * dem Briefkasten
A study of an unusual Danzig postal method by Bill Ruh
Aus dem Briefkasten: a postal marking that literally means “out of the mail box”. It is used on mail that enters the postal system through a box on the street rather than being taken to a post office for the processing of special needs, such as, 1) registration, 2) special delivery (Express) or 3) both services. The Aus dem Brief kasten marking is used to relieve the postal service of responsibility for the contents, condition, posting, or speed of delivery before the letter formally came into their possession.
