ZRIII Mail, continued:
1. The weight of each letter could not exceed 20 grams.
2. The place of destination must be in the U.S., Canada, or the countries of Central or South America.
3. The rates are to be:
a) For letters: 1.50 gulden
b) For cards: 0.50 qulden
4. All dispatches were to be fully franked; items not franked or insufficiently franked were to be excluded from being carried on the airship.
5. Each dispatch was to carry prominent marking: “With Airship ZRIII from Friedrichshafen.”
The records indicate that the total weight allotted to mail from Danzig was 3 kg., but mail from Danzig reached a total weight of only 320 grams. This would mean that as many as 15 to 18 items were transported, but where are they?
As a Danzig collector for about 50 years, I have been looking for such dispatches, but the only one I know of is the item pictured, formerly in the collection of Wendorf of Hamburg, and now resting in mine.
Over the years, I have tried to attend every large International Airpost Exhibition and checked at every FIP World Exhibition, but to no avail. I have never found another. Could it be that the others were lost during WWII?
Do any of you have any information on these dispatches? -Bernard A. Hennig, 5944 W.Montrose Av., Chicago IL 60634
