Danzig; a Baltic seaport on the Gulf of danzig, at an arm of the Vistula River. As far back as the 10th century, it existed as a defense outpost of the Slavic dukes against invasion from the North by Vikings, and from the west by Germany. How great the attention paid to this 'window' on the Baltic Sea is shown by the fact that at that time Boleslaw the Valiant, the second ruler of the Polosh state (992-1025), understood the importance to his nation of Pomerania.
